Carmine Lake.

Succulents have become a focal point in the life of Carmine Lake since moving to the Historic Copper Mining Town of Kapunda in 2000.

The move from sub-tropical Northern New South Wales to South Australia greatly impacted the theme on both sides of the studio walls.

Residing and working in the old Evangelical Lutheran Church ‘Little Glory’ on South Terrace with her partner and fellow artist BJ Moore, Carmine is currently engaged in painting her “Succulent Series”.

For Carmine, an Artist and Gardener, the climatic change presented the need to adapt to a more appropriate Dry garden / Mediterranean themed planting, which in turn is the current dominant subject in her artwork.

…At first I was reluctant about succulents and cactus. They evoked memories of the tortured looking, straggly and shrivelled specimens I had witnessed in the past. Luckily for me, thanks to my partner’s talent for garden design, plant selection and colour placement, I was soon to witness the potential of these fascinating and forgiving little creatures and haven’t been able to stop painting them…
